OLD SILO (859)498-4697
Kentucky Golf Course Review
Old Silo is a 7011 yard par 72 championship course located in Mt. Sterling, 30 miles east of Lexington. This Graham Marsh layout was designed on 209 acres of rolling bluegrass in the year 2000 and was awarded the #1 Public Course in Kentucky by Golf Digest in 2003 In 2002 Golf Digest featured Old Silo as the "6th Best New Affordable Public course in America." Along with these awards the course has been featured in Golf Magazine, and USA Today.
The practice facilities are comprehensive and include a driving range with spacious bent grass teeing area, 10,000 square foot putting green, and short game area with a sand bunker. The clubhouse includes a pro shop, a full menu restaurant open daily for lunch and every Friday for dinner. The banquet facilities have space for 144 people and provide great service for golf outings.
Over 90 soft sand bunkers come into play near the landing zones or greenside throughout the layout. Six holes feature water hazards to be carried off the tee or avoided on the approach. Yardage is marked on the cart path from distances of 100, 150 and 200 yards to the greens center as well as all sprinkler heads on the fairways. Daily Pin placement information is posted on all carts as well as in the yardage books. All carts include GPS with accurate yardage information from tee to green on each hole.
Off the tees golfers will find the landing zones are sloping with mounded terrain off to the sides of the fairways. Nearly every hole on the front nine starts from elevated tees and follows the fairways downhill all the way to the greens. The back nine is a little more up and down from hole to hole. The greens are well guarded by bunkers and mounding, and the putting surfaces themselves are undulating and multi tiered.
There are four sets of tee boxes which play to distances and slopes measuring 7011 yards/139 slope, 6485 yards/134 slope, 6077 yards/130 slope, and 5509 yards with a slope of 125 from the front tees. Due to its length and other natural hazards, this is a challenging course for scratch golfers and beginners alike. All but three of the par fours play longer than 400 yards from the tips and sand comes into play frequently.
